Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
During your child’s first dental checkup (which we recommend completing by their first birthday), we won't perform any major treatments. Instead, we'll spend the time getting your child comfortable in the dental chair and accustomed to the dental office. The more relaxed they are, the easier future visits will be. We’ll spend time teaching them how to perform exceptional at-home oral hygiene as well as make sure their teeth and jaw are developing properly. Dental Sealants
The molars and premolars – or the teeth located at the back of the mouth – contain deep grooves that are perfect for breaking down food. However, they can trap debris and bacteria quite easily, making them more susceptible to decay. This is particularly the case for children who may struggle to clean the back teeth at home. By applying dental sealants to them, we can provide extra protection from cavities as they improve their oral hygiene. The application only takes a few minutes, and they provide a shield for their tooth enamel designed to last up to 10 years.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
If a tooth shows early signs of a cavity, we might be able to restore it without the use of a dental filling. Silver diamine fluoride (or SDF) can work to stop decay before it becomes severe. We’ll start by cleaning your child’s mouth, then apply the highly concentrated SDF gel to the damaged section of their enamel. There are many benefits to choosing SDF. Not only is it non-invasive, but it’s also painless and can be applied the same day as a checkup and cleaning!
Pulp Therapy
In the center of every tooth, there is a small bit of nerve tissue known as dental pulp. When bacteria break down enamel, they can sometimes access it, causing a painful toothache. Rather than having the entire tooth extracted, pulp therapy allows us to preserve your child’s natural smile all while reliving their dental pain. During the procedure, we numb your child’s tooth and remove any infected tissue while leaving the healthy tissue intact. This lets the natural tooth continue to develop as normal.
Athletic Mouthguards
Is your child quite active? Are they a future (or current!) sports star? Getting them a protective mouthguard is truly essential. If they experience an impact to the mouth, jaw, or face while playing, it could make the difference between keeping their healthy smile and having to deal with a broken or knocked-out tooth.
